Mauvilla Barge Strike Derailed Sunset Limited in 1993
On September 22, 1993, in heavy fog, a barge being towed by the Mauvilla struck and damaged the railway bridge at Big Bayou Canot. Minutes later, Amtrak's Sunset Limited entered the damaged bridge and derailed. The rail circuit was not disrupted, so the train received proceed indications and entered at the authorized track speed. Forty-seven people died, making it the worst U.S. rail accident since 1958.  ·
