The 1980s UK program The Late Late Breakfast Show allowed members of the public to take part in major stunts.

On September 10, 1983, a driver crashed at 140 mph during a live attempt to leap a car more than 230 feet. He fractured his pelvis and suffered head, neck, and back injuries. Later that year, a participant broke her shoulder after being fired from a cannon.

The show was eventually taken off air after a self-employed hod carrier was killed during his first rehearsal for a stunt called "Hang 'Em High." The stunt involved a bungee jump from an exploding box attached to a 120-foot crane. The carabiner connecting the bungee cord snapped, and an inquest found it was not fit for purpose and could barely withstand the weight of a bag of sugar.
