Jumbotron Crashes to Ice at Marine Midland Arena, November 16, 1996
Eight days after installation, the first JumboTron at the former Marine Midland Arena crashed to the ice on November 16, 1996. The eight-sided Daktronics scoreboard, fitted with Sony video screens, was being lowered remotely for routine maintenance. An arena worker in the rafters began lowering the 23-foot-tall, $4.5 million unit at about 3 p.m., a few hours before a Sabres-Bruins game. Within seconds, two of the supporting cables released much faster than the others and the scoreboard fell. The collapse occurred minutes after players had finished practice.
