A passenger train collided with a freight train in Greece on March 1, 2023. The collision was described as extremely violent, with derailed carriages catching fire immediately.

Initial reports listed at least 32 dead and 85 injured. By March 2, the death toll had risen to 57, with people still reported missing.

A fire brigade spokesperson said temperatures inside the first carriage reached 1,300 C, complicating identification of those inside. Preliminary reports said the passenger train may have been routed onto the wrong track.
