Great Britain - WWII Bomb Detonated
Great Britain - 10 February 2023 Army specialists were attempting to disarm it when there was an unplanned detonation at about 17:00 GMT.  People on social media said they heard a loud bang and felt buildings shake 15 miles (24km) away. There have been no reports of injuries among the Army, emergency services or the public, Norfolk Police said.  Cordons were put in place when the bomb was first discovered close to two gas pipes on Tuesday, and work began to make it safe. The cordons, at 200m (656ft) and 400m (1,312ft) from the bomb, were lifted on Friday evening. Most roads have been reopened and residents have been allowed to return to their homes. |

I wonder if they were using a robot because a blast like that would have taken out a person, at least I would think so.

They worked to disarm the explosives remaining in the device, but somehow it detonated on its own.

I wondered the same thing! They normally unscrew the detonator, but I thought they did that by hand. I watched "DANGER: UXB" on PBS, so I'm a semi- expert on deactivating German bombs. At least, in my own mind. Maybe they have robots that do that now. They must be pretty good robots to do that work. I understand that there are still a couple German farmers killed every year, when their tractors plow into unexploded bombs from WWII.  |

It's interesting how many hazards are still around from wars past. For some reason, I didn't think it would be a problem in Germany. I thought places like Cambodia, Vietnam and the like were really the only ones. I know I need to broaden my horizons. |

Think about that single explosion from the one bomb. There were tons and tons of bombs dropped during WWII that leveled city upon city including all the people that lived there.  For world conquest.  |

I remember a great british mini-series from the late 70s about english soldiers defusing unexploded nazi bombs during WWII in the UK. It starred Anthony Andrews (Brideshead Revisited). The handsome lead actor you thought was going to be the hero of the show gets blown to literal bits while trying to defuse a bomb. They can't bury him because he leaves no corpse, just tiny worm-sized bits of flesh that the birds find and eat over several days. Ir was called Danger UXB. Check it out if you can find it.
