400 missing. That's what gets me the most. So many families wondering and waiting.

Re: Freeway Bridge Collapse in Genoa Italy

The bridge was built in 1967, at that time not all the cars and trucks of today passed through...
Unfortunately in Italy we always want to conserve and never rebuild, and i say this as Italian....

Re: Freeway Bridge Collapse in Genoa Italy

A friend of mine lives here and told me about it.

Apparently it could be made of 'mafia concrete'. Wonder if that's just speculation for the sake of a headline, or there is there some truth.

Such a sad event :(

Re: Freeway Bridge Collapse in Genoa Italy

Apparently the bridge had maintenance two years ago. This makes you wonder how efficient that maintenance really was or if they cut corners somewhere and therefore are the ones to blame for this.

Re: Freeway Bridge Collapse in Genoa Italy

Another theory goes back to design.

The designer of the bridge Riccardo Morandi was said to be “an engineer with great insight, but lacking in practical calculations,” according to Antonio Brencich, a structural engineer who lectures at Genoa University.

Chillingly, in 2016, Mr Brencich wrote: "Right away, the bridge manifested various problems, beyond the construction costs, which went over budget.

"There are errors in this bridge. Sooner or later, it will have to be replaced. I don't know when."

Mr Brencich also claimed Mr Morandi had miscalculated how reinforced concrete ages.

In Venezuela, another bridge designed by Mr Morandi "has also experienced problems during its life, so it could be that the design implies a need for a greater degree of maintenance than normal,” said Mr Firth.

But he added: "As yet, there is no evidence to say whether any impact occurred; it is too early to say what triggered the collapse."

Re: Freeway Bridge Collapse in Genoa Italy

I just watched an interview with an Italian woman who watched the bridge collapse, and she said the large support just "disappeared like it was made of flour", which would indicate to me that the concrete was bad. I also saw pics taken a while back, showing deteriorated areas under the bridge. I could not see if it was rust, or just bad concrete, but it obviously attracted attention from the people looking at the bridge, as the damaged areas were circled. I assume the pics were taken during monitoring of the bridge sometime in the past.
