Fireworks Market Blast at Tultepec Killed 42
An explosion tore through the San Pablito fireworks market in Tultepec, State of Mexico, on the afternoon of December 20, 2016, killing at least 42 people and injuring more than 80. The market was stocked for the holidays, with reports of up to 300 tonnes of fireworks on the site. The cause was never established, though early accounts pointed to gunpowder igniting among the stalls. Search teams worked the charred rubble for days, and a dozen people were still listed as missing while the toll was revised upward. Tultepec has made fireworks for two centuries. San Pablito had burned before, in 2005 and again the following year, when hundreds of stands were destroyed.
