Fire Destroys Xuxa Park Studio During Taping in Rio de Janeiro, 2001
A fire broke out on a Rede Globo soundstage in Rio de Janeiro during a taping of the children's television show Xuxa Park on January 11, 2001. About 320 people were in the audience, most of them children and adolescents. The fire started near the end of the taping and destroyed the set. Reports attributed it to lighting inside a mechanical spaceship prop overheating; a short circuit has also been cited as the cause. Twenty-six people were injured, seven of them seriously. Most were treated for smoke inhalation. Two children, aged 7 and 10, and one adult suffered second and third degree burns. Nobody was killed. The show was cancelled after the fire.
