Exxon Valdez Grounding Spills Oil in Prince William Sound
On March 24, 1989, the Exxon-operated oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on a reef in Prince William Sound, southern Alaska, causing one of the worst oil spills in American history. Containment efforts failed. Winds and ocean currents carried the oil more than 100 miles from the grounding site, contaminating more than 700 miles of coastline.
