Ethanol Cars Ruptured and Burned After Raymond Derailment
About 22 cars of a BNSF freight train carrying mixed freight including ethanol and corn syrup came off the rails at Raymond, in west-central Minnesota, at around 1 a.m. on March 30, 2023. Four of the ethanol cars ruptured and caught fire. The blaze was still burning more than 14 hours later. Responders set a half-mile evacuation radius, which took in the whole town. All of Raymond's roughly 800 residents were told to leave, and those with nowhere to go were sent to a school in nearby Prinsburg. Nobody was reported hurt. Federal authorities took part in the investigation.
