Re: Cypress Freeway Collapse After Oakland Earthquake in 1989
I remember when this happened, they interviewed a man who was driving on the lower level when the freeway collapsed. He said he saw someone's brain lying on the road. The thought of someone's head getting smashed and the brain popping out really traumatized me at the time.

I remember very well when this happened. Lord was that a mess! The freeways and Bay Bridge were affected for a long time. Our huge aquarium was all over the floor. It was STRONG!!

We lived about sixty miles away and felt it. The news reported that a section of the Bay bridge collapsed. We thought the lower deck went down. Amazing the death toll wasn't higher. The worst part was the Giants got swept. still painful.

A family friend was killed in that freeway collapse,he was just delivering bread for work and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I lived about 50 miles north of Oakland at the time and was going from the parking lot to the grocery store when the earthquake hit. I was amazed when I looked inside, there was broken alcohol bottles and goods everywhere on the floor. I was only 9 at the time but will never forget it. |

Re: Cypress Freeway Collapse After Oakland Earthquake in 1989
I used to live in the Seattle area. The Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV) was constructed virtually identically to this freeway. To this day, they are still trying to strengthen it to hold it together until they can replace it. Everytime I took my family down to the waterfront, we had to walk under the AWV. I always thought of what happened on the Cypress Freeway every time we made that walk. |
