Crane Drops F-18 at CFB Cold Lake in Alberta

The Canadian Military was trying to move this F-18 when the lines from the crane snapped. I guess the plane was too heavy for the cable they were using.

Re: Crane Drops F-18 at CFB Cold Lake in Alberta

Could this have been cold-weather testing? Everyone is well clear of the airplane, and there is a man lift out behind that looks like it has a camera on it. I have been told they do this to see how the struts react under freezing conditions. Also, how did the airplane get out there in the first place? They must have moved it there.
Just my thoughts.......

Re: Crane Drops F-18 at CFB Cold Lake in Alberta

This is a decommissioned F-18 being used as a display aircraft. Note the very long tube coming out of the engines. It fell while they were moving the display. On either side of the airframe, aft of the canopy, there are two threaded bores that eye bolts can be screwed into. This is the normal lifting point of the aircraft. Unfortunately, the additional weight of the steel tube in the engine compartment exceeded the designated maximum lifting weight of those points, and the eye bolts tore the threads out.

F-18 suffered a very low airspeed wing stall.

I think that's just what happened, William. How else would they know how the metal would react. Maybe they were planning on taking it up to the edge of the stratosphere.

I saw the same thing many years ago, with a jet boat we built. They lifted it by the tie-down loops......
