Construction Site Tower Crane Snaps in Half Killing Operator
A tower crane at a building site in north-east China snapped and plunged hundreds of feet to the ground today, leaving at least one worker dead. Horrifying footage captured on a dashboard camera of a passing car in Dalian, Liaoning province shows the jib of the massive crane snapping in half, causing the counterweight compartment to break away and collapse. The entire structure then topples over and crashes to the ground. A worker in his 30s was inside the operator cab and rushed to hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The incident happened at about 10:50am local time at a construction site in the city's Ganjingzi district.  The site was managed by Dalian Hongfeng Construction Engineering Company, according to the Ganjingzi State Administration of Work Safety in a statement. Emergency crews continue to search through the rubble for survivors and victims, according to video news site Pear.  One witness told reporters that he heard a loud bang when the crane crashed to the ground. The structures' metal beams were scattered on a pedestrian pavement outside the construction site.  Another man said he saw the crane operator covered in blood and was still breathing when they waited for paramedics to arrive. He was taken to hospital 20 minutes later in a private car, he added. One person added that the crane was probably moving an overweight load when the metal arm broke off. |

The crane operator was identified as a Mr. Ben Dover. While it seemed fortunate that the wall broke his fall, I'm wondering why they waited 20 minutes for paramedics? And then took a private car to the hospital? |
