Chemical Plant Explosion Kills 5 and 6 Are Missing and 19 Injured
A huge explosion took place at a workshop of Shandong Youdao Chemical Co., located in the Gaomi Renhe chemical park, around noon local time on May 27, 2025. Shandong Youdao Chemical occupies over 46 hectares and employs more than 300 people. It specializes in developing, producing, and selling pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and chemical intermediates. The blast was powerful, producing a massive fireball and thick clouds of dirt-yellow smoke with a reddish tint. It shattered windows at a warehouse over two miles away and was heard 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) from the site. At least five people were killed and six people were reported missing. A further 19 people were injured. Over 230 firefighters and 55 emergency vehicles were deployed to the scene. More than 200 emergency workers, including local fire officials, responded to extinguish fires and conduct rescue operations. Chemical plant explosions in China are not uncommon, often attributed to lax safety standards or negligence. Notable past incidents include: 2015 Tianjin Explosion: Two massive explosions at a warehouse storing hazardous chemicals killed over 170 people and injured 700. 2019 Yancheng Explosion: A blast at a chemical plant in Jiangsu Province killed 78 people. 2023 Jiangxi Explosion: An explosion at a chemical plant in Jiangxi involved silicon oil catching fire, producing thick black smoke. 2024 Ningxia Explosion: Two people were killed in an explosion at a chemical plant in Ningxia. Shandong Youdao Chemical is a major producer of chlorpyrifos, a pesticide hazardous to humans. Shares of Himile Mechanical, linked to Shandong Youdao’s parent company, fell nearly 4% on the afternoon of May 27, 2025. The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation. |

Online reports state that a journalist went to the explosion site at a chemical plant in Gaomi, Shandong, to film, and police demanded that they delete all recorded footage, claiming, "Everyone who filmed earlier has been arrested." Official reports state that the explosion has so far resulted in 5 deaths and 6 people missing, and the State Council’s Safety Committee has decided to supervise the investigation of this incident.
