Cantilevered Section Fell From a New Mexico City Mall
A cantilevered, multi-storey section of the Artz Pedregal shopping mall in southern Mexico City collapsed on July 12, 2018, minutes after the building was evacuated. A support beam failed in an office area on the upper floors that projected out from the main structure. The section came down in a cloud of dust and twisted metal, and part of it fell into lanes of the expressway the mall was built alongside. Those lanes had been closed shortly before. Nobody was hurt. Staff cleared the building after structural problems were noticed. The mall had opened that March with parts still under construction, and the site had a history of subsoil movement.
