B-25 Struck Empire State Building in 1945

In 1945, a B-25 bomber became lost in fog and crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building. Fourteen people died.

An elevator operator on the 80th floor was thrown from her car and suffered severe burns. While she was being taken down in another elevator, damaged cables failed and the car fell 75 stories to the basement. She survived with injuries including fractures to her pelvis, back, and neck.
