The Antonov An-225 Mriya, the largest aircraft ever built and the only one of its kind, was destroyed on the ground at Hostomel airport outside Kyiv on February 27, 2022, in the opening days of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

It was not flying. The aircraft was inside its hangar undergoing maintenance when the fighting for the airfield, also known as Antonov Airport, reached it. Fire and combat damage wrecked the cockpit, forward fuselage, wings, centre section and aircraft systems.

Ukraine's foreign minister reported the loss that day, though the Antonov company held off confirming it while it waited for an expert assessment. The wreck was not photographed in detail until Russian forces withdrew from the area at the end of March.

Antonov has said it intends to rebuild the aircraft, at a cost put at more than 500 million dollars.
