Almö Bridge Collapse in Sweden Killed Eight in 1980
At 1:30 a.m. on January 18, 1980, the bulk carrier MS Star Clipper struck the arch of Sweden's Almö Bridge, collapsing its main span. Heavy fog was descending over the area. Ice prevented the ship from launching a boat to reach shore and warn motorists. Eight people drove over the collapsed edge before the road on the Tjörn side was closed 40 minutes later. On the mainland side, a lorry driver approached slowly in the fog, noticed the bridge railing had disappeared, and stopped about 10 metres before the gap.
