Almö Bridge Collapse After Ship Strike, Sweden, 1980
On January 18, 1980, a ship struck the Almö Bridge in Sweden during the night, causing the bridge to collapse. Several cars then drove into the water before the crossing could be secured. The Almö Bridge had opened in 1960 to connect the island of Tjörn with the Swedish mainland. It was replaced after the collapse by the Tjörn Bridge.
