Aberfan Spoil Tip Collapse Killed 144 in 1966

On October 21, 1966, a colliery spoil tip collapsed above Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. Heavy rain had caused water to build up in the tip, which had been placed over a natural spring.

The waste slid downhill as a slurry and engulfed Pantglas Junior School and other buildings. It killed 116 children and 28 adults.

The tip was the responsibility of the National Coal Board. A subsequent inquiry placed blame on the organization and nine employees.
