.50-caliber Rifle Failure Injures Shooter on April 9, 2021
On April 9, 2021, a .50-caliber rifle suffered a catastrophic failure while firing an old SLAP (Saboted Light Armor Penetrator) round with an extremely high-pressure load. The rear of the rifle blew apart after its threads sheared. Fragments struck the shooter in the face and neck, lacerating his jugular vein and breaking an eye socket. He controlled the neck bleeding with his thumb while being taken to the hospital. He underwent surgery and made a full recovery.
