1998 Eschede ICE Derailment Killed 101 People

The 1998 Eschede derailment was Germany's worst train disaster. A fatigue crack caused a wheel to fail on an Intercity Express train near Eschede.

The train was carrying 287 people. It derailed at about 200 km/h, with cars piling into one another before a bridge collapsed onto the wreckage. One coach was crushed to a height of about six inches.

A total of 101 people were killed and 87 were injured, many seriously.

The failed wheel was part of a three-part design Deutsche Bahn had adapted from tram use after passengers complained about vibration on the ICE service.
