1.000 Tons Wheat Cargo Vessel Collides with Barge and Another Vessel
On January 30, a cargo vessel reportedly collided with a couple of vessels and sustained damages to its foreship. The Dutch cargo vessel ‘Saeftinge’ collided with another vessel ‘Albatros’ and with a barge ‘Idefix’ when it was sailing downstream on the Mosel underneath were Lehmen lock off Niederfell. The barge was loaded with 1.600 tons coke, on the Mosel underneath were Lehmen lock off Niederfell. The cargo vessel ‘Saeftinge’ was sailing river downstream with a cargo of 1.000 tons wheat got its bow crushed and suffered water ingress in the foreship. The vessel was on the verge of sinking and the master of the vessel decided to run aground the vessel intentionally to prevent it from sinking. As the day progressed, the cargo from the vessel, was shifted to another ship in order to raise the damage hull region above water to address the water ingress problem. Subsequently, the problem was brought under control by the fire brigade which jointly with a work boat of the river authority Koblenz stabilized the barge all night long. The barge was also berthed at Koblenz after lightering of the cargo. The barge ‘Albatros/Idefix’ was secured at the Lehmen lock and the water ingress was brought under control by divers who patched the leaks temporarily. Meanwhile the traffic on the river was momentarily blocked and released after some time. The reason for collision is said to have caused by human error. |

Wait, what? It was loaded with 1.6 tonnes of what?! Is that "coke" as in coca-cola or cocaine? If it's the latter, it probably goes a long way in explaining why that woman was squawking so damn much. |
