Leonarda Cianciulli Aka 'Soap-Maker of Correggio'
Leonarda Cianciulli Leonarda Cianciulli was born in 1894 in Montella, Italy. She went on to be known as 'Soap-Maker of Correggio'. As a young girl, Leonarda attempted suicide twice. She married Raffaele Pansardi in 1917 but her parents were angry as they had another man they wanted her to marry. Leonarda + Raffaele moved to Lauria in 1921. 6 years later, Leonarda was imprisoned for fraud. Upon her release, she + her husband moved again, this time to Lacedonia. But they didn't stay there long as an earthquake destroyed their home. They finally ended up in Correggio + Leonarda opened up a shop + became popular in her new home. Leonarda had been pregnant 17 times during her marriage to Raffaele. She miscarried 3 times + another 10 died whilst young. Understandably, she became very protective of her 4 remaining children. In 1939, her eldest son, Guiseppe, wanted to join the army. In her worried + obviously warped mind, Leonarda thought that the only way to make sure her son was safe was by making a human sacrifice. 3 female neighbours became her victims. Faustina Setti was the first victim. Leonarda drugged the poor woman's drink + proceeded to kill her with an axe. After dragging her body to a cupboard, Leonarda chopped Faustina into 9 pieces + collected the blood in a sink. A statement from Leonarda is as follows: 'I threw the pieces into a pot, added seven kilos of caustic soda, which I had bought to make soap, + stirred the mixture until the pieces dissolved in a thick, dark mush that I poured into several buckets + emptied in a nearby septic tank. As for the blood in the basin, I waited until it had coagulated, dried it in the oven, ground it and mixed it with flour, sugar, chocolate, milk + eggs, as well as a bit of margarine, kneading all the ingredients together. I made lots of crunchy tea cakes +served them to the ladies who came to visit, though Giuseppe + I also ate them' The second unfortunate woman was Francesca Soavi. On 5th September 1940, she too was drugged + killed with an axe + her body was treated in the same manner as Faustina's. Virginia Cacioppo was to be the final victim. On 30th September, she was killed like the previous 2 women but her body was melted in order to make soap. In the words of Leonarda herself: 'She ended up in the pot, like the other two...her flesh was fat + white, when it had melted I added a bottle of cologne, + after a long time on the boil I was able to make some most acceptable creamy soap. I gave bars to neighbours and acquaintances. The cakes, too, were better: that woman was really sweet' Virginia's sister-in-law had become concerned about her disappearance + reported to the police. When Leonarda was arrested, she only confessed to the murders when the police insinuated that her beloved son Giuseppe was involved. In 1946, Leonarda was tried for murder + found guilty. Her sentence was 30 years in prison + 3 years in an asylum. Leonarda died of cerebral apoplexy, on 15th October 1970, at the age of 76, in a women's criminal asylum in Pozzuoli. Several items from the murders are displayed in the Criminological Museum in Rome, including the pot that the women were boiled in. ![]() |
