Chester Dwayne Turner was born on November 5, 1966 in Warren, Arkansas. He moved to Los Angeles at five years of age, with his mother. Turner is a high school drop-out, and worked part-time delivering Domino's pizza. After his mother moved to Utah, he shuffled around homeless shelters and missions in LA. or stayed with relatives.

The killing spree of Chester Turner began in 1987, and continued for 11 years before he was charged and convicted. Turner was incarcerated in 2002 for raping a woman in the Skid Row area. He was linked to 10 murders after agreeing to submit DNA samples to CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) as part of a no contest plea in his rape case.

News outlets reported that Turner was believed to be responsible for 13 murders between 1987 and 1998. While in jail for the 2002 rape, he was charged with the murder of 10 women, two of whom were pregnant. His DNA was matched to evidence from all 10 bodies.

Most of the slayings occurred in an approximate 30 block area of South Los Angeles. Two murders were outside of the Skid Row Corridor, one in Azusa, CA and one in Little Tokyo. With the exception of the Azusa and Little Tokyo murders, all women were slain and left dead within a four mile radius of Turner's home.

The victims were all prostitutes or homeless cocaine addicts. Nine of the 10 women had cocaine in their systems. Most were left partially naked, strangled and showed signs of forcible rape. All of the women were black, or black mixed race.

During the investigation phase, detectives discovered that David Allen Jones, 28, was convicted for the murder of three of Turner's victims. Ends up he was "coerced" into confessing, and had the mental age of an eight year old. The new DNA evidence showed that Jones did not commit the murders he spent 11 years in jail for.

Chester Turner was found guilty of the murder of 10 women, plus one unborn fetus. He was sentenced to death and incarcerated at San Quentin.

I guess it is no surprise that on August 2, 2014, Turner was sentenced to a second death penalty for the rape and murder of four additional women. Based upon his DNA, of course.

Now, for the little known facts...

This era was known as the "Cocaine Epidemic" in Los Angeles. There were in excess of 100 murders in South LA. Chester was known as the South Side Slayer. We also had Michael Player, the Skid Row Slayer, convicted of killing 10 transients in 1986. And there was Douglas Clark, the Sunset Strip Killer, suspected of killing 25+ in 1980 and convicted for six.

My knowledge is that back in 2007, Turner's DNA was found in 24+ dead women, although charges were only brought for the strongest of the cases.

We all know that back in 1980 DNA was probably not preserved, if even collected properly. I think it is very likely that Chester Turner is responsible for many more murders than the 14 he is waiting to die for. As he was escorted from the courtroom on August 2, 2014, he looked at the judge and said, "I'll be back". I don't doubt it.

Perhaps someday we will see the release of Michael Player and Douglas Clark? Maybe a few more death sentences tacked on to Chester's list?

Regardless of their lifestyle, these women and unborn children did not deserve to die at the hand of another. After his first conviction, I spoke briefly with Turner on the phone. He sounded perfectly normal, even a bit mild. Maybe how he was able to get up close and personal with the poor victims.
