The Disappearance of Shanna Genelle Peoples

When Shanna's parents spoke publicly in 2018, her mother, Windy McKee, described the family's continuing need for answers. She said, "All I want is her home. Whether she's dead or alive I want her home."

The FBI published the following notice about Shanna's disappearance:

On September 8, 2011, (then) 19-year-old Shanna Peoples was last seen near her residence in Geneva, Alabama. At the time of her disappearance, Shanna lived about two blocks from her parents' residence. Shanna's daily routine consisted of her walking or riding her bicycle between her house and her parents' residence. Shanna also frequently rode her bicycle to a nearby store to purchase soda and candy. When Shanna was discovered missing, the front door of her residence was left open and the television was left on. Although there were no indications of a struggle in the home, those close to her indicate that Shanna was very routine about turning off the television and locking the door when she left home. Also, Shanna frequently spoke on her cellular phone which was turned off at approximately 4:00 p.m., on the day she went missing.
Who She Was

Shanna Genelle Peoples was born November 22, 1991. According to the FBI, she may also use the surnames McKee or Peoples-McKee.

She lived about two blocks from the home of her parents, Elvis and Windy McKee. The FBI says her ordinary routine involved walking or riding her bicycle between the two homes. She also frequently rode to a nearby store to buy soda and candy.

The FBI describes Shanna as mentally challenged, with the maturity level of a 13-year-old girl. It says she takes prescription medication for a severe bipolar disorder, and its poster is headed "Bi-polar and may be in need of medications." The Charley Project describes her as mildly mentally disabled, functioning at a 12- to 14-year-old level, and says she did not have her daily medication with her.

According to the Charley Project, Shanna had a slight speech impediment, rarely talked, could not read well and had never driven.

The FBI lists Shanna as 6'0" and about 120 pounds when she disappeared, with brown hair and brown eyes. It also notes a birthmark on the inside of her leg above the knee. The Charley Project and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children describe the birthmark as dime-sized, with NCMEC placing it on her left thigh. The Charley Project differs from the FBI by describing her hair as sandy blonde.

Accounts of her clothing also differ. The Charley Project says she was wearing a blue and green blouse, white pants and flip-flops. A 2018 Alabama State Bureau of Investigation release reported by the Andalusia Star-News described a green tank top and blue denim pants.

The Timeline

On September 8, 2011, Shanna was 19 and living in Geneva, Alabama. The FBI says she was last seen near her residence.

WTVY placed her last known location on Morris Street, given in its coverage as North Morris Drive and N. Morris Street. According to the Charley Project, she was walking near her home at about 3:00 p.m. and was on her way to her parents' house, but she never arrived.

WTVY reported that Shanna was living with her boyfriend at the time. He was reportedly out of town when she disappeared.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., according to the FBI, Shanna's cell phone was turned off. She used the phone frequently.

The Evidence

The condition of Shanna's home stood out because it did not fit the routine described by those close to her. According to the FBI, the front door was open and the television was still on when she was discovered missing.

There were no indications of a struggle inside the home. However, people close to Shanna told the FBI that she was very routine about switching off the television and locking the door whenever she left.

Her frequently used cell phone being turned off at about 4:00 p.m. provided another fixed point in the day's sequence. No later activity from that phone is described in the FBI notice.

According to the Charley Project, Shanna's bicycle was left behind. The site describes it as her only means of transportation.

The Investigation

Multiple agencies have worked the case, including the Geneva Police Department, the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation and federal investigators.

In March 2018, the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation searched several wooded areas in Geneva. According to the Andalusia Star-News, the searches began March 1 and followed new information received by law enforcement.

WTVY reported that cadaver dogs from multiple law enforcement agencies were used. Two separate tips, one received by the Geneva Police Department and the other by the FBI, led investigators to one location. As of March 2, 2018, no remains had been found.

The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation asked the public to provide information by calling 1-800-392-8011.

Where It Stands

On the ninth anniversary of Shanna's disappearance in September 2020, Geneva police Capt. Michael McDuffie said the case remained open and was still being actively worked by local, state and federal investigators.

"You never know, any day something new may pop up. We kind of take these cases personal," McDuffie said.

Shanna remains listed in the FBI Mobile field office's Kidnappings and Missing Persons gallery, and the FBI continues to take tips. NCMEC also carries her case as number 1198505. According to the Charley Project, the Geneva Police Department remains a contact for information about her disappearance.

Shanna has not been found, and no one has been charged. No reward has been announced.
