The Disappearance of Besalynn James
The dogs were still there. That is the detail the people who knew Besalynn James keep coming back to, because she did not go anywhere without them, and on the morning of January 21, 2025, they were at the house and she was not. Who she is Besalynn Mary James is a citizen of the Lummi Nation. News reporting gives her age as 62 at the time she went missing. She is a grandmother and an elder of her community, and she lived on the Lummi Nation Indian Reservation in Whatcom County, Washington, near Bellingham. She did not drive. She kept dogs and, by the account of everyone who knows her, never went anywhere without them. The timeline The last time anyone other than her boyfriend saw Besalynn James was at 1:16 p.m. on January 20, 2025, at her own residence. Her boyfriend, Terry Bowman, told police that she left the house at about 2 a.m. on January 21 to go for a walk, and never came back. Those two points do not sit neatly together, and the gap between them is most of what this case is. There is a confirmed sighting in the early afternoon of one day, and an account, from one person, of her walking out into the dark roughly twelve hours later. She was not reported missing to the Lummi Nation Police Department until January 25, 2025. Four days passed between the account of her leaving and anyone telling the police she was gone. What was left behind The FBI notice is blunt about the scene, and it is worth reading closely, because in a missing person case the things that stayed put often matter more than the things that went. The rest of her belongings were left behind. She did not drive. She was never known to go anywhere without her dogs, and they were left behind as well. It is believed she was wearing a black jacket. A woman who cannot drive, walking away from her own house at two in the morning in January in northern Washington, leaving her possessions and her dogs, is not a picture that resolves into anything ordinary. The reservation sits on the coast north of Bellingham. It is cold and dark at that hour in January, and there is a great deal of water and woodland nearby. The investigation This is a joint effort. The FBI Seattle Field Office is working with the Lummi Nation Police Department, the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office, the Bellingham Police Department and other partners. In July 2025, the Lummi Nation Police Department publicly named Terry Bowman, her boyfriend, as a person of interest in her disappearance. He has been interviewed by both tribal police and the FBI. It needs saying plainly and it needs saying more than once: a person of interest is not a defendant. Bowman has not been charged with anything, and naming someone a person of interest is an investigative step, not a finding. The FBI has also said James had ties to Boise and Nampa in Idaho, to Nyssa in Oregon, and to Sacramento in California, which is the kind of detail that gets published when investigators want people well outside the immediate area to look at her photograph. Where it stands On the first anniversary of her disappearance, in January 2026, the FBI announced a reward of up to 10,000 dollars for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible. The Lummi Nation matched it, bringing the total to 20,000 dollars. The FBI Seattle Field Office issued a new missing person poster to mark the date, and members of the Lummi Nation held a vigil for her. As of January 2026, Besalynn James was one of 110 missing Indigenous people recorded in Washington state. That number is the context this case sits inside, and it is the reason a 62-year-old grandmother walking out of her own house can take a year to become national news, if it becomes national news at all. She has not been found. No remains have been recovered, no cause of death has been established, and nobody has been charged. She is missing, and the case is open.
