Case History

The partially clad and decomposing body of a young girl was discovered in southwest Douglas County in the Pike San Isabel National Forest, between Woodland Park and Deckers off Highway 67, in a makeshift campsite by a hiker at the Rainbow Falls Campground. Investigators believe the victim may have been dumped in the spot where her body was found. The victim's body was found within days of a nearby convention of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club that met June 12 -13, at the Horse Creek campground south of Deckers. Investigators said they have not been able to determine if the victim had any association to that group.
Investigators believe the victim may have been dumped in the spot where her body was found. She was found half nude, wearing only a black short sleeve Harley Davidson t-shirt and some unique jewelry.

At the time of the initial investigation in 1993, investigators believed the victim to be between 15-19 years old. Since the discovery of her body, several forensic examinations have been conducted and additionally, a series of anthropological reconstructions of the victim's skull have been conducted in an effort to determine her appearance, age, and identity. After the most recent forensic examination of her skull, investigators now believe the victim to be 13 to 20 years old.

No trace of illegal drugs were found in her body, and investigators found no evidence of sexual assault by intercourse, however they have not ruled out the possibility of non-intercourse sexual assault/contact.

Investigators found characteristics that indicated she might have been very well cared for prior to her death. For instance, she was healthy with no sign of disease, she had very healthy teeth with no fillings, and her wisdom teeth were removed.

A national comparison of her fingerprints have not aided in identification.

Updates from Douglas Co. Coroner's Office:

June 15, 1993, a teenage girl was discovered in southwest Douglas County near the Rainbow Falls Campground.
She was found wearing only a black Harley-Davidson T-shirt and a few pieces of jewelry. She appears to be between 16 and 19 years old and weighed approximately 140 pounds.

Authorities believe that she died after being struck on the head and that she may have been a runaway.

In 2003 a facial reconstruction of her skull was completed. The following photographs depict the reconstruction and include photos of the tee shirt and jewelry she was found wearing.

If you have any information about this crime or think you may recognize this person, please call the Douglas County Coroner’s Office at 303.814.7150.

Update on the Quest by the Douglas County Coroner’s Office to Identify Jane Doe

Jane Doe is the only individual who died in Douglas County and remains unidentified, according to available records. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office is committed to identifying her, and has undertaken steps to finally reunite her with her family.

Her remains were exhumed from her grave in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, Colorado on October 12, 2012. Bone samples have been sent to the University of North Texas in order to obtain more complete DNA analysis.

Step 2 involved sending Jane Doe’s skull to Samantha Steinberg, a phenomenal forensic artist at the Miami-Dade Police Department. Samantha has developed these forensic drawings of what Jane Doe looked like in 1993. Do you recognize her?

The Douglas County Coroner’s Office will continue on its quest to identify Jane Doe – if you recognize this drawing or have any information that would help identify Jane Doe, please contact the Douglas County Coroner’s Office at 303-814-7150 or at coroner@douglas.co.us

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) – There’s a new clue that Douglas County authorities hope will help them identify a woman murdered 20 years ago.

She’s been known as “Jane Doe,” but with a new investigative tool, authorities are hoping they can put a real name on the murder victim.

Last October, Douglas County authorities exhumed Jane Doe’s body hoping to solve the 20-year old mystery.

“It’s not just a body, it’s a person, so we want to find out and reunite her with her family,” said Lora Thomas, Douglas County Coroner.

The woman was found dead at a Douglas County campground in 1993, thought to have been murdered. But she had no identification and was never identified, buried as an unknown.

Years ago investigators came up with a clay depiction of what the young woman might have looked like, but now a Miami-based forensic artist has produced a new composite drawing of Jane Doe. It’s much more detailed and much different than the earlier representation.

“Everybody watches shows like CSI and NCIS because people love the mystery, they love the solution,” Thomas said. “We have a mystery but we haven’t been able to solve it. This is all about solving this mystery.”

To solve the mystery, after the exhumation, they sent the woman’s skull to the Miami artist. She then plotted key points to create the composite of the unidentified teenage girl, who might have been a runaway.

DNA from the body is also being examined as a possible lead.

Ultimately, investigators say their Jane Doe is someone’s daughter or sister and has a family somewhere wondering what happened.

“I have a brand new little granddaughter and I’m so enthralled with her that I just can’t imagine what it would be like if something happened to her and we didn’t know,” Thomas said.

Thomas says if anyone recognizes the picture to either call the coroner’s office or the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

I think the wisdom teeth don't start coming in until late teens, early twenties- had mine out when I was 24.

Re: 1993 Rainbow Campground Doe, Douglas County Colorado

They estimate she was found 2-3 days after she died but they had to do facial reconstruction? Seems like saying she died after being hit in the head is an understatement. I wonder how severe her wounds were.

I wonder how many people at that motorcycle gathering were questioned. Sounds like an interesting clue. Of course just because she was wearing a Harley tshirt doesn't mean there is a connection.

Why do they think she is a runaway? Is it just because she hasn't been identified and they couldn't match her to a missing persons report?

I don't think it was the Vietnam biker guys. Most of them are pretty old now, and they tend to take care of each other, rather than being some kind of outlaw biker gang. That doesn't mean that it wasn't one of them who was psycho, but I tend to doubt it.

Re: 1993 Rainbow Campground Doe, Douglas County Colorado

Just a few question
a) there is no medical records in the area around and before 1993 from females who have spleen operation or dental records who have the wisdom teeth is removed?
Or the murderer remove the tooths and the organ?

b) If she have the wisdom teeth must be older then 13 that's for sure!

c) Who made a necklace and the T shirt
which county and shops or festivals have sold out of it?(probably she like harley motorbikes)

d) The police have DNA sample?

e) I still can not believe that this girl has no parents, friends, schoolmates or colleagues who miss her, try to search in the missing persons database in the year of 1993 after june and between december of 1993

Re: 1993 Rainbow Campground Doe, Douglas County Colorado

And if the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club that met June 12 -13, at the Horse Creek campground the victim the victim has to do with the group, on the basis of his motorcycle T-shirt
I think the motorcycle club members more than they say about the girl
