Pattaya was hit by the worst rainstorm in 2015 so far Wednesday night, with sustained heavy rainfall, widespread flash floods in the usual areas, and traffic chaos around the city.
Worst hit were the roads on the “dark side”, Sukhumvit Road, Pattaya Second Road, Beach Road, and the Soi Buakhao area.
The Bangkok-Chonburi motorway going past Pattaya was also flooded once again.
Many large potholes opened up, for example, on Pattaya Second Road and Thappraya Road connecting South Pattaya and Jomtien.
As the Bangkok Post notes, Pattaya’s “much-maligned drainage system” (is there one?) was once again “completely overrun by hours of rain” and one of the fiercest storms to hit the eastern seaboard in recent years.
While authories in Pattaya say the “unusual flooding” was “exacerbated by encroachment on waterways and canals which prevented the water from draining into the sea,” the interior ministry has declared Pattaya a disaster zone.
