Typhoon Matmo Makes Landfall in Hainan
Typhoon Matmo made landfall along the coast of Wenchang City in Hainan Province on October 5. It was the 21st named tropical cyclone to form in the Northwest Pacific this year. At landfall, maximum sustained winds were 45 meters per second, or 162 kilometers per hour, described as level 14 winds. Reports also described 5-meter tsunami-like waves in Hainan. Gusts near the center exceeded 55 meters per second.
