Typhoon Chaba Hits Hong Kong and Southern China
Tropical Storm Chaba formed earlier in the central South China Sea. On Saturday, July 2, 2022, it intensified into a typhoon and made landfall in Hong Kong and other parts of southern China. The typhoon brought violent winds and heavy showers to the Pearl River Estuary. Gale-force winds affected many places in the territory, with winds occasionally reaching storm force offshore and on high ground. On Cheung Chau, winds of 80 kilometers per hour and gusts of 100 kilometers per hour were recorded. People were advised to watch for flash floods and rivers breaking their banks. Chaba was expected to hit coastal areas of Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi over the weekend. At about 7 am, a tornado about 10 meters high occurred in Fuyang Town, Chaozhou City, overturning the roof of a factory. Officials said the strong wind had caused no casualties so far, and related losses were being counted. The meteorological department said Chaba's movement path and environmental conditions were more conducive to tornadoes.
