Two Strong Earthquakes Damage Buildings in Mindanao
Two strong earthquakes jolted the southern Philippines on Tuesday, March 7. The first was a magnitude 6.0 quake at about 2:00 pm, a few kilometres from Maragusan municipality in Davao de Oro on Mindanao island, according to the US Geological Survey. Nearly three hours later, a magnitude 5.6 quake hit the neighbouring municipality of New Bataan. Some houses collapsed, and local authorities said nearly 300 residents were forced to leave their homes in Andap village. About 100 people inside a shopping mall in Tagum City, in Davao del Norte, were hit by falling glasses and plates as they fled the building. There were also reports of a landslide on a national highway. Local authorities said there were no reports of casualties.
