Re: TEXAS | Catastrophic Floods Cause Deaths at Children's Camp
Death toll is now up to 43. 15 of them are girls from camp mystic. Sad news. According to meteorologist Eric Graves in other posts, the river rose 30 feet in 4 hours. The gauges quit reading at 27 feet.

Now there's some community uproar over 'did the warnings get to everyone theu should have, per so many recent vacancies in weather reporting offices....?' In the time lapse, you can see several small trees giving it a good try at resisting the flow for awhile, then just disappearing. |

The local NWS in Austin actually had EXTRA staff on hand because it was anticipated that there might be severe weather events. Everything that could be done by the NWS was done, to the limits of current instruments and technology. Nearly all rivers are prone to flooding in bad weather and this location in particular is in a known flood plane. But even the best satellite imagery, radar, and meteorologists can only predict what MAY happen. In the end it still amounts to just a scientific guess. Anyone who totally depends on the weatherman or government to protect their ass is a moron. Any DOGE cuts at NOAA obviously had no bearing on this incident and anyone suggesting otherwise is exploiting these tragic deaths for their own pathetic partisan politics. Although an early warning siren system had been proposed to locals, they voted to reject the idea based on it's expense. Now they suffer the consequences of that decision but it doesn't necessarily mean it would have prevented tragedy in this event. TBH, if you are asleep in a tent, how are you supposed to be alerted? I know there are apps and physical weather alarm units but really, no one likely prepares for that on the 4th of July. Besides, a recent survey demonstrated that most Americans turn off the warnings on their phones because they find them annoying.

Re: TEXAS | Catastrophic Floods Cause Deaths at Children's Camp
Mother nature does what it wants and there had been warnings, even days prior, for heavy rainfall etc. so when you go out camping in a high risk area check your phone for alerts and leave it on at night. Maybe irens should be installed, maintained and operational in flash flood risk areas? Just like tornado alerts. |

Re: TEXAS | Catastrophic Floods Cause Deaths at Children's Camp
The "alleged" issue is that NOAA said "3-5 inches" of rain and ended up much higher. So, budget cuts also "cut the # of inches"? :)
