Tephra Falls on Motorists Near Volcano, Hawaii

During a volcanic eruption near the town of Volcano, Hawaii, tephra fell on motorists as they drove slowly through the area.

Tephra is the general term for fragments of rock, minerals, and volcanic glass blasted into the air during an eruption, ranging from fine ash to large rocks that can hurt or kill people or wildlife.

Video showed small and large volcanic rocks falling like hail, crashing onto the road and surrounding area, piling up on the road, and damaging vehicles. Rocks were also seen falling in front of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park sign.
