Powerful Earthquake Rocks Myanmar and Thailand, At Least 1,000 Dead
I'm short on time at the moment so any additional material is welcome. A powerful earthquake rocked Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, destroying buildings, a bridge and a dam. State-run MRTV said at least 144 people had been killed in Myanmar and 732 injured. At least 10 died in the Thai capital, where a high-rise under construction collapsed. The full extent of death, injury and destruction was not immediately clear — particularly in Myanmar, one of the world’s poorest countries. It is embroiled in a civil war, and information is tightly controlled. Since overthrowing the elected civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, the military has struggled to run the country, leaving the economy and basic services like healthcare in tatters. The 7.7 magnitude quake struck at midday, with an epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city. Aftershocks followed, one of them measuring a strong 6.4 magnitude. |

Strong tremors were also reported in China's southwestern province of Yunnan, with two people slightly injured. Water from a swimming pool at some rooftop came down.

Update: The search for survivors continues in Myanmar, where some 1,700 people have been confirmed dead after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck on Friday. At least 17 more deaths have been reported in neighbouring Thailand’s capital Bangkok, some 1,000km (620 miles) from the epicentre of the quake. |

Re: Powerful Earthquake Rocks Myanmar and Thailand, At Least 1,000 Dead
The death toll in last week’s massive earthquake in Myanmar has passed 2,000, state media said, as accounts of some people’s last moments emerged: Two hundred Buddhist monks crushed by a collapsing monastery. Fifty children killed when a preschool classroom crumbled. Seven hundred Muslims struck while praying at mosques for Ramadan. In China surgeons trying to save a patient during the quake.
