A magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit southern Ecuador on Saturday, March 18, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 12:12 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 65 km. It was centered just off the Pacific Coast, about 50 miles south of Guayaquil, Ecuador's second-largest city.
