Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Hits Guerrero, Mexico
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck southern Mexico on Sunday, December 11, at 8:31 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km. Residents of the capital went into the street. The United States Geological Survey placed the epicenter 4 km northwest of Corral Falso in Guerrero, along Mexico's Pacific coast between Acapulco and Zihuatenejo. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre also listed the quake at magnitude 6. Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely widely felt near the epicenter. Local residents reported slight shaking lasting several seconds, and there were no immediate reports of damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Atoyac de Alvarez, 20 km from the epicenter, Técpan de Galeana, 24 km away, El Suchil, and San Jeronimo de Juarez.
