A magnitude 5.7 earthquake rattled Romania on Tuesday, February 14, the second tremor of similar strength in 24 hours. Romania's National Earth Physics Institute said it hit at 3:16 pm in southwest Gorj County at a depth of about 40 km.

The quake was reported felt in Bucharest and Cluj. Residents said strong tremors shook ceiling fans and other fixtures, and social media posts showed supermarket products that had reportedly fallen from shelves.

The National Observatory of Athens reported the quake at magnitude 5.6, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported it at magnitude 5.7.

Gorj County emergency authorities said they had not received reports of significant damage or casualties. On Monday, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake was also reported in Gorj County at a depth of 13.2 km.

Aftershocks above magnitude 3 followed both quakes. Preliminary seismic data indicated the shaking should have been widely felt near the epicenter, with minor shaking in Timis, Arad, Sibiu and Dolj counties, as well as in Serbia and Bulgaria.
