M7.3 Earthquake Causes Major Damage in Hualien
On Wednesday, April 3, Taiwan was jolted by its most powerful earthquake in 25 years. The M7.3 quake caused widespread damage, with major damage reported in Hualien. It briefly triggered tsunami alerts as far as the Philippines and Japan's Okinawa. The Japan Meteorological Agency detected an approximately 30 cm tsunami wave on Yonaguni Island about 15 minutes after the quake, with smaller waves observed on Ishigaki and Miyako islands. Emergency responses followed across the region.
