The 2011 Lorca earthquake (Spanish: Terremoto de Lorca de 2011) was a moderate magnitude 5.1 Mw earthquake that caused localized significant damage in the Region of Murcia, Spain. Centered at a depth of 1 km (0.6 mi) near the town of Lorca, it occurred in a populated area at 18:47 local time (16:47 UTC) on 11 May 2011, causing panic among locals and displacing many. The quake was preceded by a magnitude 4.4 (Mw) foreshock, and further inflicted copious damage to several old structures in the area. The Espolón Tower of the Lorca Castle was damaged. Three people were killed by a falling cornice. A total of nine deaths have been confirmed, while dozens are reported injured. The earthquake was reported to be the worst to hit the region since 1956.

Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero (2nd L) walks next to development minister Jose Blanco (L) and other officials as they view damaged buildings, following a 5.1 magnitude earthquake that rocked the ancient town of Lorca in southeastern Spain May 13, 2011. The earthquake killed eight people and injured more than 120. Thousands of residents have been sleeping in the streets, unable to return home after the 5.1 magnitude quake on Wednesday evening destroyed masonry and building facades, crushed cars and littered streets with bricks.

Re: The Lorca Earthquake, Spain. (11 May 2011)

My parents are currently on holiday in Benidorm, and they said they felt the earthquake from there. At the moment of the earthquake they were in some zoo / safari park or somethin, and they said that the animals just started stampeding (is that a word?)

Re: The Lorca Earthquake, Spain. (11 May 2011)

It is amazing how much damage A moderate earthquake can cause!!!I live in Washington state and back in 2000?(I think that was the year)when we had our earthquake my animal's went apeshit, one of my cat's dove off of A table and it fell on my foot and broke it!!That was the worst that we sustained, but my husband said he watched the road move in wave's behind his truck!!!It was still scary though!!I feel for all involved!!
