At Least 51 People Dead, 20 Injured After a 7.7 Undersea Earthquake
At least 51 people have been confirmed dead across the Indonesian Flores region, with at least 20 fatalities after a 7.7 undersea earthquake took place. Over 2,000 residents have been displaced and are staying in temporary emergency shelters. The roof of the assembly hall at St. Peter Major Seminary collapsed during morning Mass, forcing students and nuns to flee. At least 157 homes and more than 100 public facilities, including schools, medical clinics, and churches have been flattened or heavily damaged. Authorities initially issued a tsunami warning, prompting mass panic and self-evacuations to higher ground. The warning was lifted three hours later after only minor sea-level changes were detected. The region has been rattled by more than 235 aftershocks, with the strongest reaching a magnitude of 6.2. |
