i agree! i have been in southern california for the past 35 years (and that is as an adult so it is not like i was little and don't remember) and only 2 earthquakes really scared me. and obviously they weren't near the magnitude of this one. we have had earthquake drills at work and are instructed to "duck cover and hold". in other words, duck... preferably under a desk or something that will protect your head from any falling debris, cover your head with your hands and hold that position until the shaking ceases.

japan is probably the best earthquake prepared country on this planet. they have been building their high rise building to be able to withstand large earthquakes for quite some time. they are not noobs when it comes to earthquakes and being in them. i would think they would be trained to protect themselves in large earthquakes but apparently this store has trained them to protect the stores contents. why else would it appear that all of the employees are at the shelves, a very dangerous place to be at such a time? natural instinct would or at least should tell someone toi get the hell away from those shelves, not go up to them.
