Hurricane Katrina Victims: New Orleans Bodies & Photos

Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, and became one of the most devastating natural disasters in United States history. Louisiana and Mississippi suffered enormous damage, while New Orleans was hit especially hard after levees and floodwalls failed. Roughly 80 percent of the city flooded, leaving people trapped in homes, on rooftops, and inside crowded shelters while rescue crews struggled to reach them. Nearly 1,400 people died as a result of the storm and its aftermath, and hundreds of thousands were forced from their homes.

As the floodwaters remained in New Orleans, the situation inside the city became increasingly difficult. Survivors waited for food, water, medical care, and transportation while much of the city's normal infrastructure had stopped working. Dead bodies were reported in the streets, floating in flooded areas, and outside places where large numbers of survivors had gathered. Some bodies remained where they were for several days before they could be recovered. Photographs and reports from the time showed victims covered with blankets or left in public areas while thousands of people nearby continued waiting to be evacuated.

Recovering the dead became another problem during the already overwhelmed disaster response. Flooding, damaged roads, broken communications, and the scale of the destruction made recovery difficult, but there were also disagreements between Louisiana and federal officials over who was responsible for organizing the effort. A later government review found that disputes over body recovery responsibilities continued for weeks after Katrina made landfall. The images of bodies remaining in the city, along with the slow evacuation of survivors, became some of the most disturbing symbols of the government's troubled response to Hurricane Katrina.

Re: Hurricane Katrina Victims: New Orleans Bodies & Photos

New Orleans had the highest crime rate in the WORLD right before Katrina..do you think this hurricane was like a "punishment?" Some think so...but the punishment did not work...again New Orleans is back to being the murder capital of the world..!! sad thing is when disasters like this happen, innocent people and animals suffer for the deeds of others..pictures are disturbing..

Re: Hurricane Katrina Victims: New Orleans Bodies & Photos

I've never seen a emergency response so fucked up in my lifetime.
I never thought I'd see that many dead bodys left to rot for days in a developed nation, because nobody had a plan to get in and help people.
Very sad.

And that's not including the fact that missing persons in the area are immensely under-reported, plus it's an area that makes body disposal very easy, so the murder rate is most likely far higher than the official statistics would indicate...that said, there are areas in mexico near the US border such as Ciudad Juarez that are even harder to keep track of deaths in, and they are most likely deadlier places to live in than NOLA

Re: Hurricane Katrina Victims: New Orleans Bodies & Photos

One thing that really sticks out in my mind about Katrina is... watching people loot the stores, taking Nike tennis shoes, and big screenTVs. Looked like some were pretty much helping themselves to just about anything they could get their hands on. They could have been trying to help each other but there's no money in that. I wonder where the hell they thought they were going to get electricity to watch those TVs . Did they need to take 'all' of those Nikes? What a joke!!!

Re: Hurricane Katrina Victims: New Orleans Bodies & Photos

That is So sad.I lived in Louisiana at the time of Katrina,we had some damage, not as bad as the city,I lived about 90 miles south,in South Lafourche Parish. We had no, lights for weeks, electric workers from Texas would give my kids jello and water.Cable came on 1-2 weeks after the lights,People were carrying guns around and fighting over bread, milk, gas, fruit it was so sad.We got a few boxes of MRE'S to eat on.I've been through lots of storms, but Nothing like Dennis,Katrina and Rita all a few weeks or so apart.and that is why I moved back home to Mass.
