Hill Collapses, Killing 6 and Injuring 2
Peru, A landslide in the Luya province, Amazonas, left six people dead and left two injured. The accident occurred in a quarry used for the extraction of construction materials. According to initial reports, the landslide struck two dump trucks and an excavator, along with their occupants, who were buried under tons of earth and rocks. Rescue efforts began immediately, involving local police and firefighters. Among the dead were Víctor Hugo Zumaeta Tuesta , 38, and his young daughter. The father was working in the quarry when his kids visited him to bring him lunch. The boy returned home, but the girl remained at the time of the collapse. A day after the accident, rescue teams managed to recover four more bodies, bringing the total number of fatalities to six. The bodies were transferred to Luya province, where wakes are being held for the victims, including Victor Sumaeta, an Adventist missionary, and his young daughter. Local authorities have expressed their condolences and are supporting the families in their grieving process. The landslide occurred in an active quarry where construction materials were being extracted. The causes of the hill's collapse are still under investigation. Residents noted that the quarry area has already experienced a history of small landslides during the rainy season, and are therefore calling on regional and local authorities to strengthen supervision of these mining activities. They also demanded greater safety measures to prevent further tragedies that could endanger workers and families. |

Landslides in quarries don't usually happen out of nowhere. The fact it did happen and that steep dug hill in particular looks like a sign of criminal negligence.
