Flash Flood and Landslide Destroying Houses in Nepal
A devastating flash flood and landslide occurred this morning morning between 4:00 AM and 4:35 AM along the Budhi Gandaki River in central-north Nepal. An upstream landslide temporarily blocked the river's flow, creating a natural dam that subsequently burst and unleashed a violent surge of water, mud, and debris. The flood destroyed critical infrastructure, entirely sweeping away between 35 to 40 houses, 4 bridges, a camp at a local hydropower project, and parts of a highway. Residents in the affected villages reported waking up to a terrifying roar of rushing water and debris, forcing them to flee their homes in the dark to reach higher, safer ground. Official updates confirm 5 people are missing. Over 49 people were rescued by the military via helicopters, and more than 1,200 residents have been displaced. |
