Decorative Towers Collapse Before Papal Mass in San Antonio
Two 150-foot decorative towers at an outdoor altar site in San Antonio, Texas, collapsed in gale-force winds on September 10, 1987. The temporary structures had just been completed for Pope John Paul II's planned Sunday Mass when a severe thunderstorm brought winds reported above 70 mph. A fireman warned the crowd before the collapse, and there were no severe injuries. Workers cleared debris from the site the following day. Church officials said the damage would not jeopardize the Mass scheduled for September 13.
