Decomposing Sperm Whale Ruptures in Tainan, January 17, 2004
A decomposing sperm whale ruptured while being transported through Tainan, Taiwan, on January 17, 2004. The whale was about 56 feet long and weighed roughly 60 tons. It was being hauled by truck to researchers for a necropsy when gases from internal decay caused the carcass to burst on a busy street. Blood and internal organs were scattered onto nearby cars and shops, and traffic was stopped for hours.  ·
