I've heard once in a documentary the hurricane experts say its because they can better differ them from each other. If they talk about a certain happening, they just mention the name of the hurricane and they know when it was, what happened etc. For documentation reasons?

That's exactly it - and as silly as some laymen think the practice is, it's been pretty convenient for them as well - imagine having to talk about how tragic it was when new orleans was hit by hurricane 1548, or worse, just talking about 'that one hurricane that hit such and such', and people respond with 'which one?'

Plus, people just like to name things.
