Bridge Collapses, House Floating Away Due to Rising Water in Transbaikalia

The flood in Transbaikalia became the heaviest in the history of meteorological observations, dozens of settlements were left without communication, and the water has already come close to Chita.

Residents complain that they cannot reach the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and so they save themselves.

The words of Transbaikalian Governor Natalia Zhdanova seem a malicious jest to many residents of the region. Thousands of people have already lost everything. It is unclear whether authorities can adequately compensate for the lost.

The water is rising for several days. As a result of the most torrential rains, the rivers burst its banks. Powerful streams of water wash off bridges and roads.

Rescuers supply aid, but there are few of them. Friends and acquaintances only help.

Particular indignation is caused by the fact that almost no one received a flood notification. Only today the Ministry of Emergency Situations sends out SMS messages. The Investigative Committee is already checking the fact of non-warning.

On July 12, Minister of Natural Resources of the Transbaikal Territory Alexander Volkov was dismissed.

Head of the Chita city Duma Anatoly Mikhalev and Head of the city administration Oleg Kuznetsov also face charges.

They appeared at the office only on July 12; one was on vacation, the other was on a business trip.

A lot of people, fearing looters, refuse to leave their homes, in which the first floors are submerged. Those who have nothing to lose are taken to schools and kindergartens. Federal TV channels hush up the tragedy.

No one can imagine what happened.

Valentin Bulavko, correspondent of the Chita.ru publication: “The state of emergency situations and flooding declared in six districts of the Trans-Baikal Region.

A significant part of the dacha cooperatives has been flooded. Part of the suburbs, part of the streets in Chita are submerged, but even the authorities can not reveal the exact figures.”

But the most challenging situation arose in remote villages, says priest from the town of Shilka Alexander Tylkevich. As another clergyman told him, the food resources run dry.

Alexander Tylkevich, the priest of the Petro-Pavlovsky temple of the city of Shilka: “There is no bridge, there is no connection with them, and, unfortunately, the food runs dry.

Only the helicopter could supply the food and water. I do not know how it is implemented, we do not monitor this issue, but we organize our rescue expedition, we will also supply flour, essential products, and deliver to the north.”
