August 28, 1990 - Supercell - Precursor to Eventual EF-5
This was the precursor to what would eventually become a massive EF-5 tornado 30 minutes later that devastated the towns of Plainfield and Crest Hill, Illinois. The footage in this video was taken atop Huskie Stadium at Northern Illinois University. At this point, it is believed they captured the cell at EF-0.

Tornadoes scare me more than any other kind of possible disaster/weather event. Maybe it's just because I've never had to deal with a hurricane, flood, etc., but hard to imagine hating them any worse if I did.

I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was living in a town 30 min or so from Plainfield.. I was playing Super Mario Bros. 3 and I had noticed the sky was getting dark and back then I was terrified of storms (I was real young lol). I continued playing untill I got to level 6 on the first world. Then it got bad so I stopped playing and I heard sirens going off so naturally I watched the news with my mom (my dad was at work) and she had said after a few minutes to go to the basement and to take the cat with. So I did and next thing I know she races down to the basement and says in a frantic voice there is a tornado 20 miles from us..stay put down here. So she went back upstairs. I also remembering having to pick my grandma up from someone's house and seeing a bunch of hail on car windshields after the storm had passed. |
